My favorite gaming chair so far

My favorite gaming chair so far

Secretlab is perhaps one of the best-known names when it comes to the iconic high-back gaming chair. Although I’ve tried some from Vertagear and AndaSeat in the past, the $549 Secretlab Titan Evo 2022 is the first time I’ve considered using a so-called “gaming chair” like my main seat to work and play all day. Be sure to click on the video below to see all the details.

What’s new for 2022?

For 2022, Secretlab has made many changes and upgrades to the Titan line. With the naked eye, it can be difficult to tell all the differences, but there are quite a few changes to cover.

First, new materials are available. We have the new Softweave Plus fabric, which is a $20 upgrade. It’s a mix of gray and black yarns that give a nice bright look. Most of my testing was in the winter, so I couldn’t test how cool this will keep you, but it’s also designed to be more durable than other fabrics.

The base material is special leatherette. I haven’t tried the Secretlab NEO hybrid leatherette, but it’s designed to be more durable than standard faux leathers which have a reputation for deteriorating in a short time. Again, I haven’t tried this new leatherette to test it and those are Secretlab’s claims.

Additionally, the Titan EVO has different sizes available for different user sizes.

  • Small – less than 5’6″ 200 lbs.
  • Regular – 5’7″-6’2″ under 220 lbs
  • XL = 5’11” – 6-9″ and 175-395 pounds

The chair we have here is a regular size, which suits me fine. I’m 6’1″ and about 185 lbs.

4-way lumbar support

In my opinion, one of the main features here is the four-way lumbar support. Now Secretlab has adjustable lumbar support on the old Titan, but this new chair has new capabilities. In addition to pushing to support your lower back, the support can also move up and down to hit your back in the right place. There are two dials, one on the left and one on the right, which control the height and thrust of the stand.

For me, I’m pretty close to max height on the full size chair, and I’ve been using it near the lowest height setting and almost pushed it all the way up. It keeps my posture in a much better position than when the support is not engaged.

Likewise, it’s a major upgrade from gaming chairs that rely on removable cushions to provide support. The ability to dial the lumbar support on my back was a welcome feature.

Secretlab has also designed quick-change arm tops. For $80, some upgraded premium Technogel arm tops are available for pre-order from Secretlab.

Alternatively, the 4D armrests provide plenty of adjustability by moving up, down, swiveling in and out, and moving forward and back. There is a bit of slop when moving, but most of the time that’s not an issue for me.

Magnetic head pillow

Secretlab has really taken the time to think about things that can make the Titan EVO 2022 even more premium. Another example of this is the magnetic memory foam head pillow. Instead of always being attached or using straps, the pillow snaps into place using magnets. There’s about five inches of height adjustment with this mount design. And on top of that sleek mounting method, the pillow feels great with cooling gel and soft memory foam.

Personally, I don’t use the cushion much as I keep the back quite straight, but when I want to lean back a little, the head cushion is a comfortable addition to the chair.

But wait, there’s more

Beyond new materials, lumbar support and interchangeable armrests, the Titan EVO 2022 has many more updates. A redesigned sculpted pebbled seat base, shorter hydraulic circuit and anti-counterfeiting NFC tag add to the performance of this chair.

To install

Secretlab provides excellent documentation on how to build the Titan EVO 2022. Everything is well labeled and easy to find. Compared to gaming chairs I’ve tried, the Titan EVO 2022 was easier to assemble.

Secretlab Titan Evo 2022: Comfort

With all of these features combined, the Secretlab Titan EVO 2022 has been my favorite racer-style gaming chair I’ve tried. The adjustable lumbar support is a clutch for me. I spend a lot of time at my desk when I work and often in the evening when I play. Having a chair that helps support and promote healthy posture has been crucial.

I’m still not sure if I’d prefer this to the standalone Kinn, which has been my favorite for over two years. I spent a lot of time in this chair. But the 2022 Titan EVO is the first time I’ve really considered ditching it for a “gaming chair.”

Although it doesn’t lay flat, it has about 165 degrees of recline and can bend ridiculously far forward. When working at my desk, I like having the chair nearly upright to promote better posture, but I appreciate the ability to tilt a bit. And like most gaming chairs, on the left side of the chair is a level that will allow the chair to tilt and you can lock it at any angle. This may be where the vertical adjustment of the seat back comes in handy.

I would describe the cushion as on the firm side. It’s not a super comfy plush seat. But, again for me, that’s what I prefer. I don’t really feel like sinking into a chair when I’m gaming on my PC or working all day. Secretlab describes it as the perfect blend of comfort and support, which I agree is exactly what I prefer in a chair.

The sides of the seat lift up a bit and cradle me when I’m seated, but that’s nothing like the high-end design of the Vertagear SL5000 which really looks like a race car seat. Again, that’s about perfect for me at 6’1 and 185 pounds.

Taken from 9to5Toys

Overall, I love the Secretlab Titan Evo 2022 gaming chair. If I had to pick, there is a bit of a slope in the armrests and a bit in the rocker mechanism as well. Even when you have it locked in a rocking position, the chair will tilt back and forth a bit when I adjust my position. Most gaming chairs I’ve tried do this, so I wasn’t too surprised when I experienced it on the 2022 Titan Evo as well.

If I haven’t already said it clearly enough, this is the first time I’ve considered using a gaming chair every day for work and gaming.

Now, I haven’t tried Razer’s new Izkur chair, which has similar adjustable lumbar features and is currently on sale for $400, but I now understand why Secretlab has built its reputation among gamers and professionals alike.
