Dawgs shared the Boyd Gaming Classic opening day

LAS VEGAS – No. 7 Washington split the opening day of the Boyd Gaming Classic in Las Vegas, New Mexico State (14-3, 5), before falling to extras against Houston (4-5, 8).

After going back and forth in the first and second innings, the Dawgs struck early and often in the third, scoring eight runs. Olivia Johnson set the bats in motion with a sacrificial fly. With bases loaded, Sami Reynolds was then hit by the pitch, walking Madi Huskey residence. Baylee Klingler followed with his third Grand Slam of the season. Huskey finished scoring the inning with an RBI single.

One down before round six against Houston, Jenn Cummings, who had two assists in the game, managed to connect and score the equalizer. When Houston responded in the bottom of the sixth, it was Huskey’s hot shot that was able to bail out the Dawgs. His three-run homer gave the Dawgs the lead, 4-3. Another Cougar home run late in the seventh sent the game to extras. With a starting runner second, Houston hit a sack fly to advance and score.


1st: Kinsey Fiedler single, then flew second. She placed third on a throwing error, then scored, unearned.

1st: A series of singles and sacrifices put the Aggies on the board.

2nd: madison huskey home run to center field.

2nd: Megan Vandegrift reached on an error, advancing Olivia Johnson who scored, not deserved.

2nd: New Mexico State Circuit (2 RBIs).

3rd: Johnson hit a fly sack to score Jenn Cummings.

3rd: Sami Reynolds was hit by the pitch, heading home to Huskey.

3rd: Baylee Klingler Grand Slam.

3rd: Huskey singles to center field, scoring Kelley Lynchwho was third.

4th: Klingler hit his second home run of the game, scoring Reynolds and Vandegrift.


Baylee Klingler hit his third Grand Slam of the 2022 season (last against San Diego State). It was his second multi-home run game of the year (the last against Tennessee). The last Husky to record seven RBIs was Morganne Flores on 02/20/21. Only two other Dawgs have had more RBI in a single game, Michele Church (8) on 04/30/93 and Taylor Smith (8) on 03/21/10.

Gabbie Plain picked up the win, pitching three innings and striking out five. Brooke Nelson came in for the last two innings, striking out three.

3rd: Houston came first on the board with an RBI double.

6th: Jenn Cummings choose the middle and mark Rylee Holtorf (which was as a pinch racer).

6th: The Cougars responded with a two-run homer.

7th: Madi Huskey home run, scoring Holtorf and Olivia Johnson.

7th: Houston answered, once again, with a home run to the center right.

8th: A Cougar bag volley scored the winning point.


Washington left 11 on base, compared to just two left by Houston.

Kelley Lynch started, pitching six innings and striking out five. Sarah Willis entered the seventh, followed by Gabbie Plain for the last out of the inning.

Madi Huskey hit his second home run of the day, bringing his season total to four.

Washington used 15 of the 16 players available in the competition.
