Like the well-worn pieces of power armor, the long-awaited Fallout TV series finally seems to be coming together. Originally teased in summer 2020, the live-action adaptation of the post-apocalyptic action RPG series has received several major updates over the past few months, the latest of which is the casting of Ella Purnell (yellow jackets, army of the dead) in a lead role opposite Walton Goggins (Virtuous Gemstones), as noted by Variety.
Details are currently scarce regarding the plot of the upcoming series (which is currently in production), but known as the video game series, the TV series will be set in a retro-futuristic alternate future set decades ago. after a nuclear war between China and the United States left most of the world in an irradiated wasteland. Whether the series takes place in the same continuity as the games or adopts a new timeline (à la “Silver Timeline” from Paramount Plus’ Halo series).
That being said, here’s everything we currently know about the live-action Fallout TV series.
Fallout TV series will stream on Amazon Prime
As revealed through the series’ initial trailer, the live-action Fallout TV series is a co-production between Amazon Studios and Westworld Jonathan Nolan of Creator and Lisa Joy’s Kilter Films. The series, officially marketed as “Prime Original”, will stream on Amazon Prime Video.
“Fallout is an iconic global franchise, with legions of fans around the world and a rich and deeply captivating storyline that fuels it. And Jonah and Lisa are the perfect storytellers to bring this series to life,” said the director of Amazon Studios operation and television co-director Albert Cheng. said in a press release. “We’re thrilled to partner with Bethesda to bring Fallout to television.”
Westworld creator and executive producer Jonathan Nolan to direct pilot episode
In January, Variety reported that Jonathan Nolan, who would be the executive producer of the TV series Fallout alongside his collaborator and wife Lisa Joy, would also be direct the first episode of the series. The pair have previously collaborated on Westworldof which they created the show version.
“Fallout is one of the greatest game series of all time,” Joy and Nolan said in a statement at the time. “Each chapter of this incredibly imaginative story has cost us countless hours that we could have spent with family and friends, so we’re extremely thrilled to partner with Todd Howard and the rest of Bethesda’s crazy brilliants to bring this this massive, subversive and darkly funny universe with Amazon Studios.
2018’s Tomb Raider writer and Portlandia executive producer to helm series
While Nolan and Joy will be executive producers on the To fall show, actual showrunner duties will fall to Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner. Robertson-Dworet is a screenwriter whose previous credits include co-writing the 2018 screenplay grave robber with Alicia Vikander and 2019 Captain Marvel with Brie Larson. Wagner’s credits include several notable shows, including The office, Portlandia, and Silicon Valley.
Ella Purnell was cast as one of the series’ protagonists alongside Walton Goggins
Variety reports that Ella Purnell (yellow jackets, Star Trek: Prodigy) played the lead role in the upcoming Fallout TV series. Walton Goggin (Justified, Virtuous Gemstones) was also cast as the series lead.
While specific details are still unknown regarding Goggins and Purnell’s roles, Variety claims that Goggins will play a ghoul, one of the human characters horribly disfigured by radiation exposure in the Fallout universe, while Purnell’s character is described as “upbeat and oddly straightforward with an all-American can-do spirit” . [with] an intensity in her eyes indicates that she might be just a little bit dangerous.
